Festive Fun

It was 7.10 pm. A cold, damp Wednesday night in Ayr High Street, no-one about. Suddenly we spied a brightly lit shop and a warm welcome waiting for Ayr Writers’ Club members at Waterstones book shop. This was our fun night (not that many aren’t!), full of festive cheer, flashing jumpers and dodgy beards. It was also a night for members to hand in and be judged on their Flash Fiction efforts. Just fifty words on a festive theme!
Our excellent host for the evening, David of Waterstones gave a very upbeat message to us writers: local is good. Local writing and local publication in the Ayr area is going from strength to strength and local books are outselling many top authors strutting the international stage. A special mention was made of a new book from local sporting legend Johnny Hubbard – and it’s selling well. Great to hear. Next, a break for eagerly anticipated Christmas fayre and a chance to catch up with other members. As the hubbub died down our president Nigel rose. The dreaded quiz, cunningly devised to stretch our grey cells, was upon us. Suffice to say some team members’ grey cells were more stretched than others, resulting in generous prizes being awarded to the overall winners. Meanwhile Waterstones’ staff were ploughing their way through our Flash Fiction entries.
After David announced the winners, we were treated to a reading of the top efforts. Congratulations to worthy winner Iain and runners up Linda and John.
Ayr Writers’ Club thanked Waterstones for providing such warm hospitality and the evening closed with eager club members let loose to browse the store and purchase Christmas goodies at their leisure.
