Club Info

Ayr Writers' Club offers three types of evening:

  • Speakers - once a month we are visited by a well-established writer or someone from a related field

  • Workshops - which may involve hints and tips on publication or on improving our writing

  • Club nights a more informal type of evening where members have a chance to socialise with others in the club

For more details of this year's syllabus, please follow the link to the schedule page.

Competitions are set for different genres of writing and the entries are, in the main, judged by our guest speakers. Entry to each competition costs £1 and there are book tokens and trophies for the winners. As all the entries are anonymous, everyone has an equal chance of winning. It is the writing that is being judged, not the length of time anyone has been in the club. In addition, there is a special trophy that can only be won by new members.

Successes include articles, stories and poetry written by club members which have appeared in a wide range of national and international newspapers and magazines. In addition, material has been broadcast on the BBC and local radio and plays have been performed at the SeptembAyr Festival and East Kilbride One Act Festival. As soon as a member's work has been published, they are encouraged to write it up in the Success Book, which is read out periodically to acknowledge the achievement.

Prizes won by club members include diplomas in the Scottish Open Poetry Competition, a place on the shortlist for the Geoffrey Whitworth Trophy, first prize in a Calvados competition, and first prize in the adult section of the South Ayrshire Energy Agency competition.

Refreshments - tea, coffee, and biscuits - are available at a cost of 50p
