LOUD SATISFIED MIAOW
Parts of his fur were whitish and other parts were brownish and blackish and there was a lot of him. In fact, an awful lot of him. He was, in other words, fat. He was fat because he loved food. Not only his food but any other food he could get his paws on. As soon as he had finished his own food, |

GREEDY CAT GOBBLING DOWN FOOD FOLLOWED BY BURP AND DOG WHIMPERING
no cat flap went uninvestigated. So it was that when Geraldo slipped
through a hedge into the garden of a house quite far away from his own
home and saw a cat flap, he could not resist having a look. He peered through the wee window and his yellow eyes lit up. There on the floor inside, sat not one, but two dishes of food. And they were full. Full of something that looked very, very scrumptious indeed.
Geraldo didn’t even stop to think. He squeezed his head through the cat flap, which was quite small and after all, he was a large, no, a fat cat. |

SQUEEZING
He pushed his front paws through and then his shoulders. So far so good. But his stomach was just too big and Geraldo stuck, halfway in the cat flap. His head and shoulders and front paws were through, but his rear end and his long bushy tail remained firmly outside. Not only that, Geraldo could smell the food and a glorious fishy smell it had, all salmon and herring and sardines, but he couldn’t get to it. It was just out his reach.
Geraldo was cross.
‘Fancy making this cat flap so small,’ he said to himself. ‘How’s a cat to get through it I don’t know. And oh, that food smells good!’
He tried to pull his stomach through the flap. He tugged and tugged and gripped his claws into the floor covering and heaved and heaved. But it was no use.
He scrabbled with his back legs outside to get a grip and tried to push himself through but he was firmly stuck.
‘It’s no good,’ said Geraldo. ‘I’m not going to be able to reach that delicious smelling, mouth watering food. I’ll have to leave it.’
He tried to push himself back out of the cat flap, but of course he couldn’t move that way either. He pushed and pulled and heaved and
grunted but he couldn’t budge.
‘I’m stuck,’ he said, rather surprised. ‘What will I do now?’
Just then he heard a slight noise. A black cat appeared in front of him. A slim, sleek, glossy black cat.
‘What are you doing in my cat flap?’ it asked.
Geraldo thought quickly. He couldn’t run away and he couldn’t fight so he said, ‘I was just popping in to say hello. I’m Geraldo’
‘Are you indeed? Well my name’s Mozart and I live here and I think you were going to eat my dinner. And Haydn’s,’ he added as another cat, this time brown and lithe and acrobatic appeared.
‘Who’s this?’ purred Haydn. ‘What’s he doing in our cat flap?’
‘Er, actually I’m stuck,’ said Geraldo. ‘I can’t pull myself in and I can’t push myself out.’
‘We’ll soon sort that,’ said Mozart, pushing Geraldo’s head. But Geraldo still didn’t move.
‘Help me Haydn,’ said Mozart. ‘help me push Geraldo out.’
Haydn and Mozart pushed and pushed but Geraldo stayed stuck.
‘It’s your stomach,’ said Mozart. ‘You’re too fat.’
‘Why don’t we just leave him then?’ suggested Haydn. ‘After a few days without any food he should be slimmer and be able to get his stomach out.’
Geraldo groaned. A few days without food. The thought nearly made him ill. How could he ever go a few days without food? Especially when there were bowls of it just beyond his reach. Haydn was tucking into it and the smell of all that fish made Geraldo’s mouth water.
‘How do we get out if he’s stuck in our cat flap?’ asked Mozart. ‘No, we’ll have to get him out somehow.’
Then, Geraldo heard a noise somewhere near his tail. It was another cat.
‘What are you doing there?’ it asked Geraldo’s tail.
‘I’m stuck!’ Geraldo shouted. ‘Help me! Grab my tail and pull.’
The cat got hold of Geraldo’s tail and pulled. Mozart and Haydn pushed from inside and Geraldo tried to suck in his stomach. But he didn’t move.
‘I’ll round up some friends of mine,’ said the cat outside. ‘Wait there.’
‘As if I’d be able to go anywhere else,’ moaned Geraldo.
A little while later, the cat came back with lots of friends. |

LOTS OF CATS MIAOWING
‘Right,’ said the cat outside. ‘All of you grab a bit of Geraldo and pull as hard as you can.’
The cats grabbed his tail and his back legs and any bit of fur they could see, while inside Mozart and Haydn pushed as hard as they could, and Geraldo sucked in his stomach. |

LOUD POP
Geraldo shot backwards out of the cat flap. He shook himself and licked his fur which was sticking up all over the place.
‘Er, thank you all very much,’ he said to the cats. ‘And thanks for having me,’ he said to Mozart and Haydn, who were peering out the cat
flap at him.’
‘You weren’t invited,’ said Mozart.
‘And we won’t until you’re a lot less fat,’ added Haydn.
‘Yes, er, right then,’ said Geraldo as he tried to saunter back home as if nothing had happened. |
