A most enjoyable and informative day at the Robert Burns Centre, Dumfries at the SAW Write Down South. Participants, seven of us from AWC, enjoyed an introductory talk by the irrepressible Cathy MacPhail, including (after some technical hiccups) a very atmospheric trailer for her film, Another Me, soon to be released in Spain. UK date is yet to be announced.

Then came the adjudications. First, poet Rab Wilson gave us his thoughts on the entries and then Karen Campbell announced the Short Story results. Our own Helena Sheridan came second in the Poetry competition, and Greta Yorke took third place, while Janice Johnston and Babs Stevenson were Highly Commended for their short stories. I gained a Commended for a poem too, so all in all a successful day for AWC.

After a tasty finger food lunch, taken in the sunshine of the Centre’s patio overlooking the River Nith, we were spoiled for choice for workshops. I could have done with ‘another me’ to attend the ones I had to miss! Marc Sherland, SAW President, brought the event to a close with appropriate thanks and the presentation of prizes, and we all wended our way home in the glorious sunshine, I for one with my writing tastebuds whet for action once more.
