First Night – 4th September, 2013

Write Away

By George, what fun we had. People travelled from the four corners of the earth (ok, Girvan, Mauchline, Kilmaurs and Troon but it doesn’t sound as good) to congregate and cogitate on the coming season’s writing delights. Journeys were not in vain. There was hardly a seat left in the house. Even the Edinburgh pandas would have paused to ponder on the prestigious programme that was hot off the printing presses. Full credit to the Presidents on preparing a clever and coherent syllabus that sizzles with sensational speakers. The appreciation was palpable as Dorothy unpacked the upcoming parade. Ann and Sheila entertained and informed us on the layout of a manuscript before submission for publication and what should be in a book review.

Over coffee there was time for a catch up chat about work that is in development. (Technical industry jargon, I have ironing in development.) After the break, we all took part in a short writing exercise with some volunteers reading out their work sparking pandemonious laughter. It is obvious there is real talent in the room. It augurs well for the future.

Our happy literary troop departed with our imaginations set on fire by the challenge. What challenge you ask? A deliciously delirious challenge devised by Dorothy that will get us writing, right away. The evening was a perfect prelude to the forthcoming sublime season. Even the little Prince would have suspended his napping, yapping and burping to take it all in.

  1. Great blog start to the year, PW.
